In this episode Kirsty and Sarah discuss stereotypes from different countries and what we as expats and travellers both love and hate about stereotypes in equal measure.

This time last week in Australia, the Australian team won the world cup in cricket.

The media focussed on two particular events in the press. Apart from the obvious win, and the ticker tape parade. During the game, the Australian wicket keeper put on his usual ‘sledging’ show. And after the game a Shane Warne (an ex-cricketer) asked not once but 5 times whether the players were thirsty and how many days they would celebrate.

The stereotype for an Australian is brash, uncooth, drunk, uncultured. And often Australians play up to the stereotype. Hard, gritty, physical.  We’re beach bums, sun-kissed, we can all swim and no-ones afraid of snakes, spiders and sharks. Except we’re all not really like that at all.

What does the average Australian look like now in 2015? This very interesting article from the Sydney Morning Herald takes a look at how we as Australians have changed over the years.

Kirsty shared an hilarious analogy of stereotypes of different countries which you can look at here.

We also shared some fabulous and hilarious responses to the 4 kids, 20 suitcases and a beagle Facebook page this week on stereotypes and Sarah shared this funny and insightful article on 55 nations stereotypes.

Sarah’s You Tube pick this week is the French and Saunders skit about expat ladies which you can view here.

Sarah’s Instagram – @zozalajail is a Qatari man based in Doha but travels the world endlessly, he loves his food and his food photography is amazing

Sarah’s Podcast – Criminal – If you’re a fan of Serial then you may really like Criminal. True crime stories. Very complex. Stories of people who’ve done wrong, been wronged or been caught somewhere in the middle. “Call Your Mum” episode is one of my favourites. A lot of people don’t tell their mums everything, they keep the dark dirty stories to themselves…unless of course you and your Mum are in the business of death!
